The climb out of Sierra City is 3000′ of elevation gain with no shade. After getting a taste of 100 degrees yesterday, I had no intention of hiking that section during the hot part of the day. I was up at 5 am and was on the road at 6. I passed 1200 miles part way up. The water was really unreliable in this section. The only water source that was supposed to be reliable for the first half of the day, turned out to be a stagnant pond with about ten cows literally wading across it. Oh well, drink up and hope the water filter works! That night I camped near a spring that had delicious, cold, non-cow contaminated water. I once again fully appreciate good water sources.
