In the morning, we climbed 1500′ into the Indian Heaven Wilderness. Along the climb, we heard more elk and pretty soon, one was staring at us from about 50 feet away. At the top of the climb, we walked the ridge where it was cold and windy. My thermometer read 48 degrees. Once we got off the ridge and got back into the trees, we were walking along and saw another bear just off the trail in front of us. He quickly ran off when he saw us. Most people go the entire trail without seeing a bear. I have been fortunate to see three so far on the trail. Later in the day, before we could set up camp, it started raining again.
