In our eight years of marriage, we have made of the most of our vacation time.  We have enjoyed our time traveling, seeing new places, and trying new things.  Our travels have taken us to sixteen US National Parks, three Canadian National Parks, and many other scenic places.  On one of these trips, we spent the night on the Pacific Crest Trail in Anza-Borrego State Park in southern California.  The next morning, instead of hiking back to the car, we couldn’t resist the urge to continue hiking northbound.  After that trip, the PCT seed was planted in our minds.  In April of 2014, we pursue our biggest adventure together and thru-hike the PCT.

Equipped with maps and spreadsheets, I am able and willing to take planning to the extreme.  At this point, I can dehydrate or spreadsheet anything.  I got my start hiking and backpacking in Boy Scouts at a young age.  Over the years, school and a career took over.  Hiking and backpacking no longer fit into my life.  Our vacations spent in the outdoors rekindled the love I once had for hiking and backpacking.  I am loving all aspects of the PCT planning process,  but I can’t wait until April 18th!

I may not be the planner, but my passion for travel and adventure leads me to this once in a lifetime opportunity to hike the PCT.  I enjoy exploring nature, visiting  new places, animals, and connecting with family and friends.  My other passion is Ashtanga yoga.  I believe yoga has helped me discover my best self.  It has helped me realize that when you keep an open heart and mind, you are capable of more than you can imagine.

  1. It’s wonderful to see married couples on the trail–and folks who also went with the Adventure Journal format for their blog! I, too, am deep in the throes of planning and preparation for a thru-hike this year; I hope I’ll get to say hello at some point on the long trail. Keep up the great posts–they’re helping me to think about the things I still need to do…

    1. Thanks for comment. Looks like you have a great plan for hiking the trail this year, especially considering the current water situation in SoCal. Hiking the desert in the fall should be fantastic. Hope to see you out there!

  2. Aloha Alan and Janel! I’m a day hiker and trail angel in Washington state. I’m looking forward to traveling with you on your PCT journey. My hiking club met several PCT 2013 hikers and had a ball sharing trail magic. Hope to see you when you get to the Chinook Pass area of WA!

  4. Hi Alan & Janel! My hiking group and I met you on the PCT near Sonora pass. We were the one’s asking all the questions about your gear and what you eat. Good luck with your PCT adventure! Look forward to reading about it!

  5. Alan & Janal,
Hi Guys! You stopped at my table at Harrah’s & we chatted about your trip on the PCT & the Tahoe Rim Trail (I’m the crazy guy with the dark glasses, remember?). What a fantastic website you’ve created! You two are my heroes. My wife and I enjoy hiking on the Tahoe Rim Trail, but what a wonderful dream you two are fulfilling by thru-hiking the PCT. We will follow your site and escape our city woes by imagining that we are on the trail too. Who knows, perhaps one day, in our not-so-distant retirement we too can thru-hike the PCT. Your site is so beautiful, informative & inspiring. Our hearts are with you! Will & Sue Marshall

    1. Good to hear from you Will! We did walk away from that table with some $$$!!!Thank you so much for your kind words. All it takes is one idea to do something and you can watch it unfold before you. It was so nice meeting you!
